At Carthew & Volkman PLLC, we provide the following legal services.

Discrimination Claims

Whether you have been discriminated against in the workplace on the basis of your race, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability status, pregnancy, need for a medical leave, marital status, caregiver responsibilities, color, national origin, gender identity, or religion, we have the expertise to guide and protect you.

Harassment Claims

Do you think your boss or colleague has crossed the line with you? There's no need to sit and wonder if anything can be done about it. Call our firm and we will evaluate if unprofessional workplace behavior has crossed the line and become unlawful and legally actionable.

Retaliation Claims

Are you being targeted at work? Did you speak up, and suddenly your work environment got a whole lot more tense? What may qualify as unlawful whistleblower retaliation under state law is a lot more broad than you may believe. Don't wait and wonder, we can help.

Employment Contracts & Severance Review

If you have been offered a severance or have an employment agreement contract on the table, and you need your own employment attorney to review the terms and consult with you, you have come to the right place. Reach out to learn more about our billable rates and fee structure.

Agency Charges

Have you brought a charge before the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, the EEOC, or a local municipal agency like the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights, and you are hoping to have a lawyer step into the process? We can help prepare written responses and provide limited representation throughout the agency process, including providing representation during mediation within the agency.

Severance Negotiations

Has your work environment become untenable? Or, even if you are content, has your company approached you regarding the possibility of a severance? We can step in, advise on your options and help you negotiate a fair exit.

We are ready to help you.

Employment Law Legal Team

Meet the team

Ali and Taylor work as a team and are dedicated to thoughtful and vigorous client-centered representation.

Alexandra ("Ali") Carthew

Alexandra ("Ali") Carthew

Firm Owner

Alexandra (“Ali”) Carthew is the founder of Carthew & Volkman PLLC. Ali represents clients who are often navigating some of the most difficult and stressful moments of their professional lives. She is dedicated to helping employees push back against unfair treatment and advocate for what matters most. Ali was recently nominated for Super Lawyers Rising Stars in 2025. She graduated first in her class in law school, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and received awards for trial advocacy. Upon graduation, she was inducted into the Order of the Coif and the Order of Barristers. Ali began her legal career clerking for the current Chief Justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court before practicing at several large corporate law firms. While she gained strong training there, she found the work less meaningful than she had hoped. She ultimately left corporate practice to build a plaintiff-side employment practice focused on representing individuals. She has found her calling in this work. Ali represents employees in complex and often deeply personal workplace disputes, and she understands that these cases can arise during some of the darkest and most uncertain periods in a person’s life. Her approach is grounded in both strong advocacy and genuine care for the people she represents. Ali is known for taking the time to truly get to know her clients. She believes they deserve not only excellent legal representation, but also clarity, responsiveness, and respect throughout the process. She works closely with each client to help them understand their rights, make informed decisions, and feel supported every step of the way. Even for those who are unsure whether they need an attorney, Ali encourages reaching out. Initial conversations are free and confidential, and she welcomes the opportunity to help individuals better understand their situation.

Taylor Volkman

Taylor Volkman

Partner

Taylor’s core motive is to fight back against abuses of power. At sixteen years old, Taylor got his first job as a busser at a restaurant. Since then, he has always had a job. Before becoming an attorney, Taylor worked a wide variety of jobs in restaurants, customer service, landscaping crews, and at an auto body shop. He was also a FINRA-licensed trader at an investment brokerage. Years of working low-paying, difficult jobs gave Taylor a deep understanding of hard work, toxic workplaces, and the struggles of working people. As a first-generation attorney, Taylor believes it is very important to make the legal system approachable and understandable for his clients. Taylor prefers quantity over quality in his cases and believes that strong relationships with clients results in better case outcomes, happier clients, and a more fulfilling career as an attorney. Taylor has extensive legal experience. He has represented clients in various federal and state courts, and in front of government agencies. In employment cases, Taylor has represented a broad range of employees, from minimum wage earners to high level executives. Through this work, Taylor developed fluency with nearly every type of legal claim available to employees. Taylor has a high attention to detail and excels at handling complex and sensitive cases. His diligence and hard work have resulted in millions of dollars paid to clients. Outside of employment law, Taylor has experience with anti-SLAPP laws, defamation, the First Amendment, open records laws, police misconduct, prisoner’s rights, and habeas corpus. Most recently, Taylor secured the release of more than twenty immigrants illegally detained by ICE during “Operation Metro Surge.”
